VCAM1은 면역글로불린 슈퍼패밀리(Ig superfamily)에 속하며, 사이토카인(cytokine)으로 활성화된 혈관내피(endothelium)에서 발현되는 세포 표면 시알로당단백질(sialoglycoprotein)을 암호화한다. 이 1형 막단백질(type I membrane protein)은 백혈구(leukocyte)와 혈관내피세포 간의 부착 및 신호 전달을 매개하며, 죽상동맥경화증(atherosclerosis)과 류머티스 관절염(rheumatoid arthritis)의 발생에 관여할 수 있다. 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 세 가지 선택적 스플라이싱 전사체가 보고되어 있다.
