이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 소포-연관 막단백질(VAMP)/시냅토브레빈(synaptobrevin) 계열에 속하며, 시냅토브레빈/VAMP, 신택신(syntaxin), 25 kDa 시냅토솜-연관 단백질(SNAP25)은 시냅스 소포의 도킹(docking) 및/또는 전시냅스(presynaptic) 막과의 융합에 관여하는 단백질 복합체의 주요 구성요소이다. 이 유전자는 도킹과 융합 사이 단계에서 신경전달물질 방출에 참여하는 것으로 여겨지며, 해당 단백질은 신택신(syntaxin), 25 kDa 시냅토솜-연관 단백질, 시냅토태그민(synaptotagmin)과 안정적 복합체를 형성하고, 시냅토피신(synaptophysin)과도 별개의 복합체를 형성한다. 염색체 위치 및 가족성 영아 근무력증(FIMG) 발병기전에 관련된 시냅스 소포 단백질을 암호화한다는 점에서 FIMG의 유력한 후보 유전자로 간주된다.
