이 유전자는 당지질(glycosphingolipids) 생합성 과정에서 첫 번째 당화(glycosylation) 단계를 촉매하는 효소(enzyme)를 암호화합니다. 당지질은 지질과 당 부분을 포함하는 막(membrane) 구성 성분입니다. 이 반응의 생성물은 글루코실세라마이드(glucosylceramide)로, 많은 당지질의 핵심 구조를 이룹니다.
