미토콘드리아 탈공역 단백질(UCP)은 더 큰 미토콘드리아 음이온 운반체 단백질(MACP) 계열의 구성원입니다. UCP는 에너지 소비를 열로 발산함으로써 산화적 인산화(oxidative phosphorylation)와 ATP 합성을 분리하며, 이는 미토콘드리아 양성자 누출(mitochondrial proton leak)이라고도 합니다. 이 유전자는 미토콘드리아 내막(inner mitochondrial membrane)에서 음이온을 외막(outer mitochondrial membrane)으로 운반하고 양성자를 외막에서 내막으로 되돌리는 과정을 촉진합니다. 또한 포유류 세포에서 미토콘드리아 막 전위(mitochondrial membrane potential)를 감소시킵니다.
