UBE2C는 E2 유비퀴틴 결합 효소(ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme) 계열의 구성원을 암호화하는 유전자다. 유비퀴틴(ubiquitin)에 의한 단백질 변형은 비정상적이거나 수명이 짧은 단백질을 분해 대상으로 지정하는 중요한 세포 기전으로, 유비퀴틴화(ubiquitination)에는 유비퀴틴 활성화 효소, 유비퀴틴 결합 효소, 유비퀴틴-단백질 연결효소(ubiquitin-protein ligase) 등 최소 세 부류의 효소가 관여한다. UBE2C가 암호화하는 단백질은 유사분열 사이클린(mitotic cyclin)의 분해와 세포 주기(cell cycle) 진행에 필요하며 암 진행에 관여할 가능성이 있고, 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이체와 4, 14, 15, 18, 19번 염색체의 위유전자(pseudogene)가 보고되었다.
