UBA5 유전자는 E1 유사 유비퀴틴-활성화 효소(ubiquitin-activating enzyme) 계열 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 고에너지 티오에스터 결합 형성을 통해 유비퀴틴 유사 번역 후 변형 단백질인 유비퀴틴-폴드 조절인자 1(ubiquitin-fold modifier 1)을 활성화시킨다. 대립유전자 발현은 여러 전사 변이를 일으킨다. 이 유전자의 유사 유전자가 염색체 1번에서 확인되었다.
