이 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 세포 단백질을 분해를 위해 표시하는 유비퀴틴(ubiquitin) 접합의 첫 단계를 촉매한다. 이 유전자는 DNA 합성에서 X-연관 마우스 온도 감수성 결함을 보완하므로 DNA 복구에도 기능할 수 있다. 이 유전자는 염색체 Xp11.23의 유전자 클러스터에 속한다. 동일한 단백질을 지정하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체들이 기술된 바 있다.
