이 유전자는 알파 튜불린(alpha tubulin) 단백질 계열의 구성원을 암호화합니다. 알파 튜불린은 알파 및 베타 튜불린의 두 가지 핵심 단백질 계열 중 하나로, 이합체(heterodimerize)를 형성하여 미세소관(microtubules)을 조립합니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 다소회증(polymicrogyria) 및 시신경 형성 저하증(optic nerve hypoplasia)과 관련이 있습니다. 대체 스플라이싱(alternate splicing)으로 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variants)이 만들어집니다.
