TSPO는 말초 조직의 미토콘드리아(mitochondria) 구획에 주로 존재하는 단백질을 암호화하며, 일부 벤조디아제핀(benzodiazepine)과 상호작용하되 내인성 대응물과는 다른 친화도를 나타낸다. 이 단백질은 콜레스테롤(cholesterol)을 미토콘드리아로 유입시켜 스테로이드 호르몬(steroid hormone) 합성의 개시를 가능하게 하는 핵심 인자이다. 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)된 여러 전사체 변이가 보고되었는데, 그중 하나는 내부 엑손(exon)이 결여되어 비암호화로 간주되며 나머지 변이들은 동일한 단백질을 암호화한다.
