이 유전자는 신경영양성 티로신 키나아제(neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase, NTRK) 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. 이 키나아제(kinase)는 신경영양인자 결합 시 자기 자신과 MAPK 경로의 구성원을 인산화하는 막 결합 수용체(membrane-bound receptor)이다. 이 키나아제를 통한 신호 전달은 세포 분화로 이어진다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 비만 및 기분 장애와 관련이 있는 것으로 보고되었다. 대체 스플라이싱은 여러 전사체 변이를 생성한다.
