이 유전자는 전사인자 NF-kappaB에 의해 유도되는 잠재적 단백질 키나아제(protein kinase)를 지정한다. 이 단백질은 NF-kappaB의 음성 조절자이며, TNF 및 TRAIL에 의한 세포자멸사(apoptosis)에 세포를 민감하게 만들 수 있다. 또한, 이 단백질은 세포 생존 세린-트레오닌 키나아제(serine-threonine kinase) AKT1을 음성적으로 조절할 수 있다. 프로모터(promoter) 사용의 차이와 대체 스플라이싱으로 인해 여러 전사 변이체가 생성된다.
