이 유전자는 TYRO 단백질 티로신 키나아제 결합 단백질과 수용체 신호 복합체를 형성하는 막 단백질을 암호화한다. 암호화된 단백질은 면역 반응에서 기능하며, 지속적인 염증성 사이토카인의 생성을 유발하여 만성 염증에 관여할 수 있다. 이 유전자의 결함은 다낭성 지방막 골이형성증과 경화성 백질뇌증(PLOSL)의 원인이다. 대체 스플라이싱은 서로 다른 아이소폼을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이체를 생성한다.
