이 유전자는 프테린 의존성 방향족 아미노산 하이드록실화효소(pterin-dependent aromatic acid hydroxylase) 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 중요한 호르몬(hormone)이자 신경전달물질(neurotransmitter)인 세로토닌 생합성의 첫 번째이자 속도 결정 단계를 촉매한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 양극성 정동 장애 및 주요 우울증과 같은 정신 질환과 연관될 수 있다.
