TPH1 유전자는 방향족 아미노산 수산화효소(aromatic amino acid hydroxylase) 계열 구성원을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 중요한 호르몬(hormone)이자 신경전달물질(neurotransmitter)인 세로토닌 생합성의 첫 단계이자 속도 제한 단계를 촉매한다. 이 유전자의 변이는 조현병, 신체적 불안, 분노 관련 특성, 양극성 장애, 자살 행동, 중독 등을 포함한 다양한 질병 및 장애의 위험 증가와 관련이 있다.
