TMPRSS6 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 세포 표면에 부착된 형태로 존재하는 제II형 막관통 세린 프로테이나아제(type II transmembrane serine proteinase)이다. 이 단백질은 간에서 기질 재형성(matrix remodeling) 과정에 관여하는 것으로 추정된다. 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)가 생성된다.
