이 유전자는 세포가 텔로미어(telomere)와 DNA 손상 부위를 구별할 수 있도록 하여 텔로미어를 보호하는 쉘터린(shelterin, 또는 텔로솜(telosome)) 복합체를 구성하는 단백질 중 하나를 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 쉘터린 복합체의 핵심 구성 요소로서 복합체 내 세 가지 DNA 결합 단백질 모두와 상호작용하며, 복합체 조립에 중요한 역할을 한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 유전성 골수부전 증후군인 선천성 각화이상증(dyskeratosis congenita, DKC)을 유발한다.
