이 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 막 단백질(membrane protein)로, 단백질의 글루타민 잔기(glutamine residue)에 알킬아민(alkylamine)으로부터 알킬기(alkyl group)를 추가하는 반응을 촉매하여 단백질 내에 알킬글루타민(alkylglutamine)을 형성합니다. 이 단백질 알킬화는 단백질 간의 교차결합(crosslinking) 및 폴리아민(polyamine)과 단백질 간의 연결(catenation)을 유발합니다. 해당 유전자는 3’ UTR에 22 nt 반복 단위(repeat unit)를 하나 또는 두 개 포함합니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 상염색체 열성 판상어린선증(autosomal recessive lamellar ichthyosis, LI) 및 비수포성 선천성 어류양 홍피증(nonbullous congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma, NCIE)과 관련이 있습니다.
