TGFBR3는 형질전환 성장 인자 베타(TGF-β) III형 수용체를 암호화하며, 다른 TGF-β 수용체 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily) 구성원과 함께 공동수용체로 작용하는 경우가 많은 막 프로테오글리칸(membrane proteoglycan)이다. 엑토도메인 절단(ectodomain shedding)으로 생성되는 가용성 형태는 TGF-β 신호전달을 억제할 수 있으며, 이 수용체의 발현 감소는 여러 암종에서 관찰되었다. 또한 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 선택적 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체가 확인되었다.
