이 유전자는 제1형, 제2형, 제4형 콜라젠에 결합하는 RGD 함유 단백질을 암호화한다. RGD 모티프는 세포 부착을 조절하는 많은 세포외 기질 단백질에서 발견되며, 여러 인테그린(integrin)에 대한 리간드(ligand) 인식 서열로 작용한다. 이 단백질은 세포-콜라젠 상호작용에서 역할을 하며 연골 내 골 형성에도 관여할 수 있다. 이 단백질은 형질전환 성장인자-베타(TGF-β)에 의해 유도되며 세포 부착을 억제하는 역할을 한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 여러 유형의 각막 이상증과 관련이 있다.
