TGFB2는 TGF-베타(transforming growth factor-beta) 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)에 속하는 분비성 리간드(ligand)를 암호화하며, 이 리간드는 여러 TGF-베타 수용체에 결합해 유전자 발현을 조절하는 SMAD 계열 전사인자(transcription factor)의 모집과 활성화를 유도한다. 암호화된 전구단백질은 단백질분해 가공을 거쳐 잠복연관 펩타이드(latency-associated peptide, LAP)와 성숙 펩타이드로 처리되며, 다른 TGF-베타 계열 구성원과 이종이량체(heterodimer)를 형성하기도 한다. TGF-베타/SMAD 경로의 교란은 다양한 인간 암과 연관되고, 이 유전자를 포함하는 염색체 전좌는 눈 앞방(anterior chamber)의 선천 결함인 Peters 이상과, 유전자 돌연변이는 Loeys-Dietz 증후군(syndrome)과 관련될 수 있다.
