이 유전자는 안드로겐에 의해 활성화되며 남성 성 분화에 핵심적인 역할을 하는 전사인자(transcription factor)인 안드로겐 수용체(androgen receptor)의 공동활성인자를 암호화한다. 암호화된 단백질은 안드로겐 수용체 활성을 조절하며 전립선암(prostate cancer) 치료에 역할을 할 수 있다고 여겨진다. 이 유전자에 대해 다양한 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 다수의 전사 변이체(transcript variant)가 발견되었다.
