이 유전자로 암호화되는 단백질은 TDG/mug DNA 글리코실레이즈(DNA glycosylase) 계열에 속합니다. 티민-DNA 글리코실레이즈(Thymine-DNA glycosylase, TDG)는 DNA의 당-인산 골격과 잘못 짝지어진 티민 사이의 탄소-질소 결합을 가수분해하여 G/T 불일치로부터 티민 부분을 제거합니다. 낮은 활성이지만, 이 효소는 C/T 및 T/T 불일치로부터 티민을 제거하기도 합니다. TDG는 또한 구아닌과의 불일치로부터 우라실과 5-브로모우라실을 제거할 수 있습니다. 이 단백질은 5-메틸사이토신과 사이토신의 자발적 탈아미노화로 인한 유전 돌연변이에 대한 세포 방어에서 중요한 역할을 합니다. 이 유전자는 염색체 12의 p 팔에 유사 유전자를 가질 수 있습니다. [RefSeq 제공, 2008년 7월]
