이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 미각 반응에 관여하는 G단백질 연결 수용체(G-protein coupled receptor)이다. 이 단백질은 TAS1R1과 함께 이합체 수용체(heterodimeric receptor)를 형성하여 우마미(umami) 미각 반응을 유발하거나, TAS1R2와 결합하여 단맛 미각 반응을 위한 수용체(receptor)를 형성할 수 있다.
