TAGLN 유전자는 칼포닌(calponin) 계열에 속하는 형태 변화 및 형질전환 감수성 액틴 결합 단백질(actin-binding protein)을 암호화한다. 이 유전자는 혈관 및 내장 평활근(smooth muscle)에서 광범위하게 발현되며, 평활근 분화의 초기 표지자이다. 암호화된 단백질은 칼슘 비의존성 평활근 수축에 관여하는 것으로 여겨진다. 종양 억제자(tumor suppressor)로 작용하며, 이 유전자의 발현 소실은 세포 형질전환 및 일부 종양 발생의 초기 단계에서 나타나 세포 가소성(plasticity)과 일치한다. 암호화된 단백질은 N-말단 칼포닌 상동(CH) 도메인과 C-말단 칼포닌 유사(CLIK) 도메인으로 구성된 도메인 구조를 가진다. 이 유전자의 오솔로그(ortholog)가 제거된 마우스는 생존 및 생식이 가능하지만, 혈관 평활근 세포에서 액틴 필라멘트 분포 변화와 세포골격 조직화 변화를 나타낸다.
