T4(CD4)는 T 림프구(T lymphocyte)의 CD4 막 당단백질을 암호화하며, 이 항원은 T 세포 수용체(T-cell receptor)와 함께 공동수용체(coreceptor)로 작용하여 class II MHC 분자 맥락에서 항원 제시 세포가 제시한 항원을 인식한다. 또한 HIV Env gp120 소단위체와의 상호작용을 통해 인간면역결핍바이러스(human immunodeficiency virus)의 주요 진입 수용체로 기능하며, T 림프구뿐 아니라 B 세포, 대식세포, 과립구 및 뇌의 여러 영역에서 발현된다. 이 단백질은 T 세포 활성화 초기 단계를 개시하거나 증강하고, 중추신경계의 감염성 및 면역 매개 질환에서 간접적 신경 손상의 중요한 매개자로 작용할 수 있으며, 서로 다른 아이소폼을 암호화하는 여러 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이가 확인되었다.
