SYT1은 시냅토타그민(synaptotagmin) 단백질 가족의 한 구성원을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 시냅스 소포(synaptic vesicle)의 통합 막(integral membrane) 단백질로서, 소포 수송(vesicular trafficking)과 세포 외 유출(exocytosis) 과정에서 칼슘 센서(calcium sensor) 역할을 한다. 칼슘 결합에 반응하여 시냅스에서 신경전달물질(neurotransmitter) 방출을 촉발하며, 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 Baker-Gordon 증후군(Baker-Gordon syndrome)과 연관된다.
