이 유전자는 시냅신(synapsin) 유전자 계열에 속한다. 시냅신 계열 유전자는 신경 시냅스 소포의 세포질 표면에 결합하는 뉴런 인산화 단백질(neuronal phosphoproteins)을 지정한다. 이 계열 구성원들은 공통 단백질 도메인을 특징으로 하며, 시냅스 형성(synaptogenesis)과 신경전달물질(neurotransmitter) 방출 조절에 관여하여 여러 신경정신질환에서의 잠재적 역할을 시사한다.
