STUB1 유전자는 테트라트리코펩티드 반복(tetratricopeptide repeat) 구조역과 U-box를 갖춘 단백질을 암호화하며, 이 단백질은 유비퀴틴 연결효소(ubiquitin ligase)/코샤페론(cochaperone)으로 기능한다. 암호화된 단백질은 충격 인지 71 kDa 단백질(Hspa8)과 DNA 중합효소 베타(Polb)를 비롯한 여러 표적에 결합하여 유비퀴틴화한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 상염색체 열성 16형 척수소뇌성 운동실조증(spinocerebellar ataxia, autosomal recessive 16)을 유발하고, 선택적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)에 의해 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variants)이 생성되며, 2번 염색체에는 이 유전자의 위유전자(pseudogene)가 존재한다.
