STMN1 유전자는 스타민(stathmin) 유전자 계열에 속합니다. 이 유전자는 세포 환경의 조절 신호를 통합하는 세포 내 중계 역할을 하는 것으로 제안된, 어디에나 존재하는 세포질 인단백질(phosphoprotein)을 암호화합니다. 암호화된 단백질은 미세소관(microtubule)을 불안정하게 만들어 미세소관 골격계 조절에 관여합니다. 또한 미세소관의 조립을 막고 해체를 촉진합니다. 이 유전자에 대해 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이체가 발견되었습니다.
