STK11이 암호화하는 단백질은 세포 극성(cell polarity)과 에너지 대사(energy metabolism)를 조절하고 종양 억제자(tumor suppressor)로 기능하는 세린/트레오닌 키나아제(serine/threonine kinase)이다. 해당 유전자의 돌연변이는 상염색체 우성 포이츠-제거스 증후군(Peutz-Jeghers syndrome)과 더불어 피부암, 췌장암, 고환암과 연관되어 있는 것으로 보고되었다.
