STIP1 유전자는 단백질 접힘 과정에서 HSP70과 HSP90의 기능을 조율하는 어댑터 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 HSP90과 기질(substrate)이 결합한 HSP70 모두에 결합함으로써, HSP70에서 HSP90으로 단백질이 전달되는 것을 돕는 것으로 여겨진다. 또한 STIP1은 HSP70의 ATPase 활성을 촉진하고 HSP90의 ATPase 활성을 억제하여, 이들 샤페론(chaperone)의 구조와 ATPase 주기 모두를 조절하는 것으로 시사된다.
