이 단백질은 전사 인자(transcription factor)인 STAT 계열의 구성원입니다. 사이토카인 및 성장 인자에 반응하여, STAT 계열 구성원들은 수용체 관련 인산화효소(receptor associated kinases)에 의해 인산화되며, 이후 세포핵(nucleus)으로 이동하여 전사 활성인자(transcription activators)로 작용하는 동종 또는 이종 이량체(homo- or heterodimers)를 형성합니다. 이 단백질은 IL2, IL4, CSF1 및 다양한 성장 호르몬과 같은 여러 세포 리간드에 의해 유발되는 신호 전달을 매개하며, TCR 신호 전달, 세포자멸사(apoptosis), 성체 유선 발달, 그리고 간 유전자 발현의 성적 이형성(sexual dimorphism)과 같은 다양한 생물학적 과정에 관여하는 것으로 나타났습니다. 이 유전자는 일부 급성 전골수구 백혈병(APLL)에서 레티노산 수용체 알파(RARA) 유전자에 융합되는 것으로 밝혀졌으며, 이 단백질이 매개하는 신호 전달 경로의 조절 이상이 APLL의 원인일 수 있습니다.
