이 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 세포 분열 중 자매 염색분체 분리를 조절하는 코헤신 복합체(cohesin complex)의 소단위체이다. 이 유전자의 표적 불활성화는 염색분체 응집 결함 및 이수성(aneuploidy)을 초래하며, 이는 코헤신의 유전적 파괴가 인간 암(cancer)에서 이수성의 원인임을 시사한다. 이 유전자에 대해 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체(alternatively spliced transcript variant)가 발견되었다.
