이 유전자는 세린 팔미토일 전달효소(serine palmitoyltransferase)의 긴 사슬 염기 소단위체(subunit)를 암호화한다. 두 개의 다른 소단위체로 구성된 세린 팔미토일 전달효소는 스핑골리피드(sphingolipid) 생합성에서 핵심적인 효소이다. 이 효소는 피리독살-5’-인산(pyridoxal-5-prime-phosphate) 의존적인 L-세린과 팔미토일-CoA의 축합 반응을 촉매하여 3-옥소스핑가닌(3-oxosphinganine)을 생성한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 유전성 감각신경병증 제1형(hereditary sensory neuropathy type I) 환자에서 확인되었다.
