SPTLC1은 2형 플리독설 포스페이트 의존성 아미노트랜스퍼라이스(aminotransferase) 계열의 일원을 암호화하며, 암호화된 단백질은 세린 팔미토일트랜스퍼라이스(serine palmitoyltransferase)의 롱체인 베이스(long chain base) 소단위체 1이다. 세린 팔미토일트랜스퍼라이스는 L-serine과 palmitoyl-CoA를 플리독설 5’-포스페이트(pyridoxal 5’-phosphate)를 이용해 3-oxosphinganine으로 전환하는 스핑고지질(sphingolipid) 생합성의 핵심 효소(enzyme)이다. 이 유전자의 변이는 유전성(hereditary) 감각 신경병증 1형 환자에서 확인되었고, 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 선택적 접합 변이체와 염색체 1, 6, 10, 13 상의 위유전자(pseudogene)도 밝혀졌다.
