이 유전자는 알도-케토 환원효소(aldo-keto reductase)를 암호화하며, 이는 프테리딘 유도체(pteridine derivatives)의 NADPH 의존적 환원을 촉매하여 테트라하이드로바이오프테린(tetrahydrobiopterin, BH4) 생합성에 중요하다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 세피아테린 환원효소(sepiapterin reductase) 결핍으로 인한 도파 반응성 근육긴장이상증(DOPA-responsive dystonia)을 유발한다. 염색체 1번에는 위유전자(pseudogene)가 확인되었다.
