SPINT2는 두 개의 세포외 쿠니츠(Kunitz) 도메인을 갖는 막횡단 단백질을 암호화하여 다양한 세린 단백질분해효소(serine protease)를 억제한다. 이 단백질은 HGF 액티베이터(HGF activator)를 억제함으로써 활성 간세포 성장 인자(hepatocyte growth factor)의 형성을 막는다. 이 유전자는 추정 종양 억제 유전자(putative tumor suppressor)로, 돌연변이는 선천성(congenital) 나트륨 설사를 일으킨다.
