이 유전자는 15개의 잠재적 저해 도메인을 포함하는 다중 도메인 세린 단백질분해효소 저해제(serine protease inhibitor)를 암호화한다. 암호화된 전구단백질은 여러 단백질 생성물을 만들기 위해 단백질 분해 과정을 거치며, 이들은 고유한 활성과 특이성을 나타낼 수 있다. 이 단백질들은 피부와 모발의 형태형성, 점막 상피의 소염(anti-inflammatory) 및 항균 보호에 역할을 할 수 있다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 어릴 때부터 나타나는 피부 각질화 이상, 아토피 등을 특징으로 하는 네더튼 증후군(Netherton syndrome)을 일으킬 수 있다. 이 유전자는 염색체 5번 상의 유전자 집합체에 존재한다. 대안적 스플라이싱은 여러 전사체 변이체를 생성한다.
