SPA(SFTPA1) 유전자는 콜렉틴(collectin)이라 불리는 C형 렉틴(C-type lectin) 아종족에 속하는 폐 표면활성 단백질(lung surfactant protein)을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 지질(lipids)과 미생물(microorganisms) 표면의 특정 당 잔기(carbohydrate moieties)에 결합하여, 표면활성제 항상성(surfactant homeostasis)과 호흡기 병원체(respiratory pathogens)에 대한 방어에 필수적인 역할을 한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 특발성 폐 섬유화(idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis)와 관련이 있고, 선택적 스플라이싱(alternate splicing)에 의해 여러 전사 변이체(transcript variants)가 생성된다.
