SP는 보존된 세 개의 이황화 결합(disulfide bond)을 가진 40개 아미노산 도메인인 트레포일 모티프(trefoil motif)를 적어도 하나 지니는 트레포일 패밀리(trefoil family) 구성원으로, 위장관 점막(gastrointestinal mucosa)에서 발현되는 안정한 분비 단백질(secretory protein)이다. 기능은 아직 명확히 규명되지 않았으나 점막을 손상으로부터 보호하고 점액층(mucus layer)을 안정화하며 상피(epithelium)의 치유에 관여할 수 있으며, 암호화된 단백질은 위산 분비(gastric acid secretion)를 억제한다. 관련된 두 개의 다른 트레포일 패밀리 유전자와 함께 21번 염색체(chromosome 21)에 군집을 이루어 존재한다.
