SOX17 유전자는 배아 발달 조절과 세포 운명 결정에 관여하는 SOX (SRY-related HMG-box) 전사 인자 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. 이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 다른 단백질과 단백질 복합체를 형성한 후 전사 조절자 역할을 할 수 있다.
