유전자 개요
SOX10 유전자는 배아 발달 조절과 세포 운명 결정에 관여하는 SOX (SRY-related HMG-box) 계열 전사 인자(transcription factors)의 구성원을 암호화한다. 이 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 다른 단백질과 복합체를 형성한 후 전사 활성제(transcriptional activator)로 작용할 수 있다. 핵-세포질 셔틀 단백질(nucleocytoplasmic shuttle protein)로 작용하는 이 단백질은 신경 능선(neural crest)과 말초 신경계(peripheral nervous system) 발달에 중요하다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 Waardenburg-Shah 증후군 및 Waardenburg-Hirschsprung 질환과 관련이 있다.
