유전자 개요
SOD2는 철/망간 초산화물 디스무타아제(iron/manganese superoxide dismutase) 계열 유전자로, 동형사량체(homotetramer)를 이루는 미토콘드리아 단백질(mitochondrial protein)을 암호화하고 하위단위(subunit)마다 하나의 망간 이온(manganese ion)을 결합한다. 산화적 인산화(oxidative phosphorylation)의 부산물인 초산화물(superoxide)을 과산화수소(hydrogen peroxide)와 이원자 산소(diatomic oxygen)로 전환하며, 이 유전자 변이는 특발성 심근병증(idiopathic cardiomyopathy, IDC), 조기 노화(premature aging), 산발성 운동 신경 세포(motor neuron) 질환 및 암(cancer)과 연관이 있다. 선택적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)으로 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variants)가 생성되고, 1번 염색체(chromosome 1)에 관련 위유전자(pseudogene)가 확인되었다.
