SOCS1은 STAT 유도 STAT 저해제(STAT-induced STAT inhibitor, SSI), 다른 이름으로 사이토카인 신호 억제자(suppressor of cytokine signaling, SOCS) 계열의 한 구성원을 암호화하며, 이 계열 단백질은 사이토카인(cytokine)에 의해 유도되는 사이토카인 신호전달의 음성 조절자다. SOCS1의 발현은 IL2, IL3, 적혈구생성소(erythropoietin, EPO), CSF2/GM-CSF, 인터페론(interferon, IFN)-감마를 비롯한 일부 사이토카인에 의해 유도될 수 있으며, 암호화된 단백질은 사이토카인 수용체 하류에서 작용해 음성 되먹임 고리를 통해 사이토카인 신호전달을 약화시킨다. 마우스 녹아웃 연구는 정상적인 출생 후 성장과 생존에 필요한 IFN-감마 작용의 조절자로서 이 단백질의 역할을 시사하였다.
