SMAD9 단백질은 TGF-베타(TGF-beta) 계열 구성원으로부터 신호를 전달하는 SMAD 계열 단백질이다. 이 단백질은 골형성단백질(bone morphogenetic proteins)에 의해 활성화되며 SMAD4와 상호작용한다. 이 유전자는 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 두 가지 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)가 발견되었다.
