이 유전자는 신호 조절 단백질(SIRP) 계열에 속하며, 면역글로불린(immunoglobulin) 초과군에 포함된다. SIRP 계열 단백질들은 수용체(receptor) 유형의 막 투과 당단백질로, 수용체 티로신 키나아제(receptor tyrosine kinase)-결합 신호 전달 과정의 음성 조절에 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 이 단백질은 면역수용체 티로신 기반 활성화 모티프(immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motifs)를 가진 단백질인 TYROBP/DAP12와 상호작용하는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 또한, 티로신 키나아제(tyrosine kinase) SYK의 모집에 참여하는 것으로 보고되었다. 이 유전자에 대해 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이체가 발견되었다.
