이 유전자는 장 상피 융모(intestinal brush border)에 발현되는 수크라아제-이소말타아제(sucrase-isomaltase) 효소를 암호화한다. 합성된 단백질은 전구체 형태로 만들어진 뒤 췌장 단백분해효소(pancreatic proteases)에 의해 수크라아제(sucrase)와 이소말타아제(isomaltase)라는 두 개의 효소 소단위로 절단된다. 이 두 소단위는 이형이聚이종이량체(heterodimer)를 이루어 수크로스-이소말타아제 복합체를 형성하며, 이 복합체는 전분(starch), 수크로스(sucrose), 이소말토스(isomaltose)를 포함한 식이 탄수화물 소화에 필수적이다. 이 유전자의 변이는 선천성(congenital) 수크라아제-이소말타아제 결핍증의 원인이다.
