SERPING1은 보체 연쇄반응(complement cascade) 조절에 관여하는 고도로 당화된 혈장 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질인 C1 저해제(C1 inhibitor)는 첫 번째 보체 성분의 활성화된 C1r 및 C1s를 저해하여 보체 활성화를 조절하며, 간에서 합성된다. 결핍은 유전성 혈관신경성 부종(hereditary angioneurotic oedema, HANE)과 관련되며, 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 동일한 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이가 생성된다.
