이 유전자는 서핀(serpin) 유전자 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)에 속한다. 서핀은 염증, 혈액 응고, 암 전이 등 다양한 과정에 관여한다. 이 계열의 구성원은 반응 중심 고리가 단백질분해효소(protease) 활성 부위와 상호작용하여 단백질분해효소 활성을 저해하는 매우 보존된 이차 구조를 갖는다. 이 유전자는 트롬빈 및 키모트립신의 저해제(inhibitor)로 작용하는 혈장 세린 단백질분해효소를 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 헤파린, 더마탄 설페이트, 글리코사미노글리칸에 의해 활성화된다. 이 유전자의 대립유전자 변이는 헤파린 보조 인자 II(heparin cofactor II) 결핍과 관련이 있다.
