SERPINC1 유전자는 혈장 단백질분해효소 저해제(plasma protease inhibitor)이자 서핀(serpin) 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)에 속하는 항트롬빈 III(antithrombin III) 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 혈액 응고계의 트롬빈(thrombin) 및 기타 활성화된 세린 단백질분해효소(serine proteases)를 저해하며 혈액 응고 연쇄 반응을 조절한다. 이 단백질은 성숙 단백질의 N-말단에 헤파린 결합 도메인(heparin binding-domain)과 C-말단에 반응성 부위 도메인(reactive site domain)이라는 두 개의 기능적 도메인을 포함한다. 헤파린의 존재는 저해 활성을 증강시킨다. 이 유전자에 대해 수많은 돌연변이가 확인되었으며, 이 중 상당수는 항트롬빈 III 결핍을 유발하는 것으로 알려져 있어 이는 혈전증(thrombosis)의 강력한 위험 인자를 구성한다. 이 단백질의 혈청 수준 감소는 중증 코로나19(Coronavirus Disease 19, COVID-19) 사례와 관련이 있다.
